Nijo Castle in Kyoto was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu. Its Ninomaru Palace is a National Treasure, and the castle is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto".
History
Tokugawa Ieyasu built the castle in 1603 as his residence in Kyoto. In 1867, near the end of the Edo period, the return of political power to the emperor (Taisei Hokan) was announced in the Ninomaru Palace.
